Antioxidants in cells and food: role and importance

Antioxidant substances have an essential protecting role in human and animal cells, however, sometimes, their function need to be supported, in which Immunovet can be helpful for our animals.

During everyday life, both in people and animals, production of so-called free radicals (reactive oxygen- and nitrogen species) is completely normal. These are highly reactive, oxygen or nitrogen containing molecules with extremely short life. The amount of free radicals in cells is controlled by the body’s own antioxidant substances, and antioxidants uptaken with feed (e.g. vitamin C and E), that are able to inactivate these reactive molecules in multiple ways. Thanks to this strictly regulated balance, normally, free radicals don’t damage human and animal cells.

Oxidative stress is the condition, when this balance is lost, and the amount of antioxidants is too low to cope with overproduction of free radicals. It can occur when the person or animal faces chronic stress (in animals e.g. moving to different home, owner change, not appropriate feeding or housing, social stress due to surrounding people or animals) or some chronic illnesses. Excessive amount of free radicals can damage the cells’ protein, fat and DNA content, which might lead to the cells’ aging, death or tumor formation.

In oxidative stress, the body can be protected from free radicals’ harmful effect by supporting its own antioxidant activity with feed supplements that contain antioxidant substances.
